Things I Learnt In 2016

So 2016 is gone, but it left me with lots of wisdom packaged as lessons, a year that I truly loved!

It came with its challenges but as they say, what’s life without challenges? Challenges are what makes life interesting; overcoming them is what makes them meaningful.

That the purpose of life is to serve God, through serving others and that is best accomplished by knowing your gift/ passion and touching peoples’ lives through it. We all have gifts, if only we looked deeper.

That many times we get tangled and lost in ways of life (could be responsibilities, work, family etc) and forget who we are, we forget to appreciate and take care of ourselves.

That at times bad things happen to pave way to good things; don’t curse every bad situation that comes your way.

That inner peace is such an amazing experience that every human deserves a right to experience.

That the power of mind is a magical tool that we all have and can use it to shape our destiny. There are no limits to our dreams; a dream is the one thing that a prince and a pauper share. Stretch your mind, we call that FAITH.

That there is nothing too small or silly to pray about.

That you don’t have to beat yourself too much over failures; just raise up, dust yourself and keep walking-like Johny walker..

That reading books is actually interesting (not just for passing exams) and apart from making your vocabulary sound ‘intelligent’ , it opens up your mind.

That you need to be comfortable and complete, on your own. You are your own world.

That ‘ FRIENDS’ is a very relative term.

That in whatever you do, give it your best; you never know who is watching and drawing inspiration from you.

That you will never fly if you keep standing at the edge of the cliff; you’ve got to jump!

That admitting you need some help doesn’t make you weak in any way; we all need help at some point.

That being you, is a breath of fresh air in paradise!

All White Affair

All white affairs have become a fad in the recent times. From weddings, to dinners, bridal and baby showers, name them. The dress code is expected to be white, from head to toe. It is important to have several pieces of white in your wardrobe that can make several combinations of outfit. You don’t want to be wearing the same white outfit in all the events. White is best accessorized with gold or silver.

I attended Diner En Blanc last weekend which was quite a new experience for me. It is a worldwide event, a picnic sort of dinner under the moonlight with a strictly white dress code. You carry your own proper dinner food, all courses and proper dinning ware, not plastics and set up your own table. I was awed by the table settings; people went all out with flowers, candles, center pieces, table decorations and it was magnificent! The attires were jaw dropping! Everyone made an effort to look stunning and the men did not disappoint. I am looking forward to the next one.

Always have a white outfit ready, you never know when an all-white affair invitation will fly your way!

Work Dress Code

Dress code in office varies depending on your work place, the HR policies or the nature of the job. We have four categories and I will tackle two on today’s blog.

Formal/executive/ boardroom dress code

This is mostly in law firms, audit firms or a work place that entails executive board meetings every so often. It is also the best dress code for interviews in a workplace that you are not sure of their policies. The most ideal is a well cut skirt or pants suit in conservative colors i.e. black, grey, navy blue or brown. A white or blue buttoned up shirt with a collar will do. The shoes should be closed with a comfortable heel in neutral colors. Minimize on accessories and be conservative with the hair on the style and the color. The nails should be neat with a clear or neutral polish. The skirt should just be an inch above the knee and you can throw in a tie while at it. Basic (minimal) make up completes the look.

Business/professional dress code

This is a bit dressed drown compared to the formal code and one can infuse a bit of personality in the suits. You can break the suit or lose the coat but the shirt remains very official with a collar. You can play more with colors but they have to be toned down. You can experiment with patterns and can play around with accessories but they should remain subtle. The hair and nail colors remain conservative. This is most ideal for bankers especially if working in the back office. Make up remains subtle.

On the blog I have a business dress code with straight pants, white shirt with cuff links, grey block shoes and minimal accessories. My hair is too experimental and not ideal for a very official workplace or interviews as it would appear to be too bold.

I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight,
I’ve never seen you shine so bright,
I’ve never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance,
They’re looking for a little romance, given half a chance,
And I have never seen that dress you’re wearing,
Or the highlights in your hair that catch your eyes,
I have been blind;

The lady in red is dancing with me, cheek to cheek,
There’s nobody here, it’s just you and me,
It’s where I want to be,
But I hardly know this beauty by my side,
I’ll never forget the way you look tonight;

Found myself humming to this song over and over again as i uploaded these pics, never mind that the dress might be orange to some people and not red, and no, there was no dance at night we just did a photo shoot; or maybe i need that dance….

Going back to the 80’s with that super Afro look and a skater dress! SLAY-AGE!

Stay In Shape

Weight issue is probably a girl’s biggest nightmare, besides finding something to wear. A flabby tummy being part of it that we try so hard to tuck in. I believe in loving myself in my own skin but I also believe in trimming to a size that I am comfortable in.

I wouldn’t say I have totally flat tummy but just like most women, I try to keep it as flat as possible. I am generally a poor feeder with a sweet tooth but I do try to keep the carbs at bay if need be. Whenever I feel like I have gained extra kilos, I cut or go slow on carbs.

The one time I really struggled with weight was after my second baby and I had to go on a strict low carb diet. That involved a normal heavy breakfast, avoiding processed foods and sticking to organics. My lunch was a normal portion with minimal carbs again. My dinner was strictly salad but since I am not a fan of veggies, I would do a tomatoes-cucumber-capsicums-mangoes salad interchangeably with grated carrots-desiccated coconut-raisins salad. I avoided any snacking at night and did away with sugar in my tea hence drinking chocolate became my preferred hot beverage. Stuff I did away with included pizzas, fries and sodas but the rest I could have in moderation. Within a month the weight started melting off me.

I don’t like the green smoothies people make nowadays, I can’t stomach blended raw spinach, but then again, that’s me. I don’t think gym helps in losing weight, it comes in handy in toning and firming up the body and keeping you fit. I am lazy when it comes to running so you will catch me jogging only when I want to relieve my mind and to catch some fresh air.

To me, losing weight is a matter of discipline on keeping the carbs low. As for the flabby tummy, sit ups, crunches, planks, leg ups etc help a lot. If you stick to a schedule of doing like 10 each every day, you should be able to see some change. Never mind that I also struggle with the discipline and end up with a muffin top which is so irritating when you want to wear fitting clothes.

All in all, dress up according to your body type, always.

Flaunt your good parts and try to camouflage what you are not comfortable with.
